About Glaciers.com

It began with
curiosity.

Glaciers.com is an independent public-information platform created by a domain owner with a longstanding personal curiosity about the Earth—and about frozen landscapes many of us once assumed would remain unchanged for generations.

Our origin

Not a research institution.
A place to connect.

Glaciers.com is not a university, scientific institution, government agency or formal early-warning service.

Its owner is not presenting himself as a glacier scientist. The platform grew from a personal interest in understanding the planet, a visit to New Zealand’s Fox Glacier around twenty years ago, and a belief that an exceptional global domain could be used for more than commercial purposes.

The aim is simple: give researchers, local communities and people whose lives are connected to glaciers a place to bring useful knowledge and observations together.

What we believe

Professional knowledge and local knowledge belong together.

Scientists bring research, technology, data and tested methods. People living alongside glaciers bring continuous observation, lived experience and knowledge of the landscape.

PROFESSIONAL EVIDENCE

Science sets the standard

Important claims should remain traceable to research, data, methods and accountable sources.

LOCAL OBSERVATION

People nearby may notice first

Residents, guides and field teams can see changes that are distant from institutions and international attention.

CONNECTED MONITORING

Signals become more useful together

Satellites, sensors, weather records, GeoAI and observations can provide a more complete view when responsibly connected.

Help the world see change sooner—and understand it better.

Our purpose

Recognise change earlier.

Glaciers once appeared permanent. Today, many are retreating or becoming connected to changing water systems, growing glacial lakes, unstable slopes and serious downstream risks.

No public website can promise to prevent a disaster. Glaciers.com can, however, help connect evidence and people that might otherwise remain separated—so changes may be recognised earlier, risks explained more clearly and useful information shared more widely.

Our role

A public bridge—not a substitute.

We support understanding and connection while respecting the responsibilities of researchers, institutions and public authorities.

Glaciers.com can
  • Explain credible research in accessible language
  • Connect regional observations with a wider audience
  • Host clearly labelled research notes, data and field reports
  • Follow glacier-related risks after headlines fade
  • Help researchers and local contributors find one another
Glaciers.com cannot
  • Replace peer review or formal scientific publication
  • Issue official emergency warnings
  • Speak for a contributor’s institution without permission
  • Guarantee the accuracy of unverified public reports
  • Promise that monitoring alone can prevent disaster

Independent by design

Credibility before scale.

Research, research notes, data and field observations are identified separately. Sources, affiliations, dates and unresolved questions remain visible. An affiliation identifies a contributor; it does not imply institutional endorsement.

Commercial support may help fund access, monitoring or communication, but it cannot purchase a scientific conclusion.

A shared public record

One credible contribution in one region can be the beginning of something valuable.
