Sermeq Kujalleq

This glacier drains inland ice through a deep channel into Ilulissat Icefjord, where enormous icebergs move slowly toward Disko Bay.

The meeting of ice sheet, bedrock fjord and ocean creates a highly dynamic calving front. Fjord depth and ocean temperature strongly influence how quickly the glacier can discharge ice.

It is one of the clearest places to see how an ice sheet connects to the ocean. Changes in flow speed, thickness and calving can affect Greenland’s contribution to sea-level rise.
