Southern Patagonian Ice Field · Argentina
Perito Moreno Glacier
Field profile
Read the landscape.
Perito Moreno flows east from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field into Lago Argentino, in a cool, windy landscape shaped by strong west-to-east precipitation gradients.
Its wide ice front reaches a peninsula and can interrupt water flow between lake arms. Fine rock flour gives the water its colour, while repeated advance, calving and drainage reshape the shoreline.
Long regarded as unusually stable, the glacier is a reminder that exceptional behaviour must be reassessed as new measurements arrive. It is also a major natural and tourism landmark.
