01 · NATURAL SETTING

New Zealand’s longest glacier descends east of Aoraki / Mount Cook. Snow accumulates high in the Southern Alps, while the lower tongue is covered by rock debris and ends in a growing lake.

02 · GEOLOGY & LANDFORMS

A broad valley, lateral moraines and Tasman Lake record rapid landscape change. Thin debris can increase melt, while thicker rubble may insulate buried ice; lake water also drives calving at the front.

03 · WHY IT MATTERS

Haupapa connects climate, freshwater, tourism and hydroelectric catchments. It also demonstrates why a debris-covered glacier can look like a rocky valley while ice remains underneath.
